Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus of Brick Township was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on murder and weapons charges, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

The charges come in connection with the death of the suspect's 32-year-old spouse, Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, at their Creek Road home on May 17, 2020, Billhimer said.

Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus' weapons charges relate to her allegedly using a wine container to strike the victim, Brick Township Police Chief James Riccio and Billhimer have said.

U.S. Marshals and FBI agents, with the help of NYPD, Homeland Security, ICE and other law enforcement agencies, tracked the Jersey Shore fugitive to Texas, Daily Voice previously reported.

Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was taken into custody by Houston police four days after the alleged fatal assault, authorities have said. She was extradited back to New Jersey, and has been held in Ocean County Jail ever since.

An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Brick Township Police Department Detective Bureau and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office found that a cylindrical container used for the purpose of chilling wine was used in committing the murder, Riccio and Billhimer said.

Responding Brick patrol officers found the lifeless body of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus in an upstairs bedroom of the residence, Billhimer said.

Investigators determined that Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus caused the victim’s death, according to Billhimer. A warrant for her arrest was issued the next day, and the suspect was taken into custody by law enforcement in Houston on May 21, 2020, the prosecutor said.
